Building Your Home Gym: Where to Start?

The popularity of home gym setups has increased exponentially in recent years, with more people than ever taking the time to build their own home fitness studio. There are so many advantages to having a home gym – they’re convenient, easy to use, make it easy to fit in a workout even on busy days, and they can be used by the whole family, to name just a few benefits!

However, it can be a big investment, and a very complex topic, so it’s difficult to know where to begin for a lot of people. Even for those of us experienced in the world of personal fitness, there’s a big difference between having a strong gym routine and choosing the right exercise equipment. Fortunately, that’s where we come in. At JIMY, we’re passionate about the benefits a home gym can have on your life, not just when it comes to fitness, but as an overall wellness tool too! We use intelligent insights and data in order to understand your needs and help you to build a custom home gym that works perfectly for your lifestyle.

There are a few things you’ll need to consider when building your home gym for the first time:

  • The equipment that you want to use and the type of exercise you want to use your home gym for
  • How many people are using the space, and what their needs may be
  • The amount of space you have available, including the square footage and dimensions of the available space
  • The kind of flooring that is right for your fitness needs
  • Your budget
  • Any machines or gym equipment that are a must for your routine

Whatever the answer to these questions, we can take it from there! We stock our own range of exercise machines, including cardio machines such as stationary bikes, treadmills and cross-trainers/ellipticals, smaller stations and accessories like weight benches, weight plates, yoga mats and foam rollers, and larger machines like squat racks and resistance machines. All of our products are built in the UK to the highest quality standards to make sure that no matter what you need from your workout space, they are safe, longwearing and easy to use. Making the Most of Your Home Gym

So you’ve built a home fitness space, now what? Just like going to the gym, there will be times when you are demotivated and feel stagnant or like you’re plateauing in your progress. Fortunately, as health and fitness have become more mainstream in recent years, there are literally thousands of resources available to help you on your fitness journey, whatever it looks like.

Apps and Online Communities

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people working out at home rose dramatically, and even as lockdown restrictions ease, the number of people doing home workouts remains much higher than pre-pandemic levels. With this rise in at-home exercise came a massive rise in resources for this kind of exercise. As well as many PT’s and studios offering online classes, communities and technologies like Peloton and SoulCycle, for example, became even more popular. Today, there are a huge number of apps that can offer you guidance and advice on all kinds of fitness-related topics, such as:

  • Example routines to follow on an everyday basis
  • Advice and guidance on proper form for almost any exercise or movement you want to try
  • Community hubs to connect with other people working out at home
  • Beginner-friendly routines for trying a new style of exercise, such as Pilates, yoga, weight training or calisthenics, for example.

While large fitness communities like these can offer a bit of a one-size-fits-all approach, they can also be incredibly beneficial.  Of course, if you’re looking for a more personalised, tailored approach to your routines, this might not be the best option for you. However, feeling like you’re progressing alongside a group of likeminded people (even if you can’t see them in person!), can be very valuable for motivating some gym-goers.

Building Your Own Workout Routines

One of the best things about having a home gym is the fact that you can work out in a way that makes sense to you. How often you work out, when you work out and what you do when you use your home gym are all completely up to you. While this is a real benefit for lots of people, it can also be difficult to stay motivated or keep your routines exciting on your own, which is why taking the time to regularly think about your routines, plan new moves and keep challenging yourself is so important.

Hiring a Personal Trainer

Hiring a PT, either in-person or for an online session is one of the most effective ways to keep yourself progressing, whether you’re at the gym or at home. A PT is able to offer you personalised support and routines that make sense for your personal goals and aims. They’re also able to help you work out safely, with correct form and to offer advice on all kinds of related topics, including diet and wellness.
